This is certainly refreshing, but the cynic inside me wonders how long until their good ideas just get gobbled up by for-profit companies.

True, we'll have to wait and see if DCAI's processes are robust enough to keep the vision in check in the long run.

For-profit companies just have a huge advantage there: they don't really need to worry about ethics.

In this case, DCAI holds the ultimate decision as to which projects will run on Gefion (as I understand it). So this gives me some hope that at least this particular initiative maintains its long-term focus.

I guess that's what I'm getting at: DCAI will (probably) ultimately decide not to do the most efficient/ruthless/powerful thing once or twice because of their ethical compass. I wonder if some of those leading for-profit models have anything at all truly holding them back from these types of things, other than (maybe) fear of lawsuits.
